My First Love

I first fell in love with NYC as a child watching Mad About You. It was a show featuring a young married couple who were living in NYC and figuring it out. I later fell in love with Living Single, The Nanny, Will and Grace, and New York Undercover all showed the varying sights, sounds, and experiences of New York. Honorable mention to Seinfeld, Lipstick Jungle, and Cashmere Mafia. As I matured in my life and my wonder of the world, Sex & the City and Gossip Girl were extremely helpful in closing the gap in my understanding of the world from my small vantage point in North Carolina.

I remember being so obsessed with NYC as a child that my parents purchased a large AAA Atlas book (definitely a throwback) so that I could memorize the city grid of NYC. When I made my first trip to the grand city at the age of 12, I was our family navigator with the entire grid and landmarks embossed on my mind. I went to the top floor of the Twin Towers, I hate a Cinnabon and threw up in a trash can at Grand Central, I had a hotdog and asked for slaw (clearly, I’m a Southerner), and I loved every minute of it. I knew my destiny at a very young age including living in NYC.

I’ve now lived in NYC for 16 years, which qualifies me as a New Yorker and someone who likes to walk rather quickly. I read the New York Times, I take the subway, I was married in Tribeca, and I work in Soho. I’ve lived a million lives here since I was 22 years old and it never gets old.

One of my favorite activities in New York is to wander the streets and look into windows. Like my most cities, the rapid pace of change means that there is always something new. A new restaurant, a new exhibit, a new neighborhood, etc. Always something to love, to hate, and to keep you intrigued.

My love of urban living is deep. The beautiful skylines, the diversity of people and activities, the architecture, and the food. I wanted a place to start chronicling the things I love, hate, and want to know more about. Welcome to the Urban Voyeur.
